Looking Back on Mobile World Congress 2017

A month on from Mobile World Congress 2017, we’re taking a look back at the event. In addition to shining a light on Mobeewave’s experiences at the industry leading conference, we’ll be presenting a few key takeaways.

This year, Mobeewave was represented on no less than three different stands: The Canada Pavilion as well as the Oberthur Technologies and Samsung exhibitions. Drawing together the leading players in the mobile space as well as related industries, MWC 2017 allowed Mobeewave to showcase its mobile contactless payment acceptance solution and connect with OEMs, MNOs, payment technology providers, financial institutions and merchants.

For those members of the team making their first trip to MWC 2017, the event didn’t disappoint. They were especially impressed with the scale of the conference, the genuine level of excitement among the attendees and the fact that the entire city of Barcelona seemed to focus on the event – a staggering 13,000 people were employed to support the organization of MWC.

Highlighting a host of emerging innovations, MWC 2017 gave a clear indication of the topics that are likely to shape the mobile landscape over the next twelve months. Taking stock of their experience at the event, the Mobeewave team listed a few key takeaways:

Everyone is Getting Involved in IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) was once again a hot topic. Touching a range of services – anything from connected cars, smart TVs and public transportation – the prominence of this topic indicated the important role it will play in the future.

In particular, Chinese original equipment manufacturer ZTE announced an IoT solution for smart cities – one which will support smart parking, metering and lighting, as well as water pollution control.

The MWC host city, Barcelona, also presented the results of a trial project that connected IoT and big data. Run through the Mobile World Capital’s d-LAB transformation initiative, the project improved the experience and managed the movement of visitors to Gaudi’s Sagrada Família.

In the payment space, Visa highlighted its recently announced collaboration with IBM, which sets out to use the IBM Watson platform to extend digital payments to cars, wearables and other connected devices.

Innovations in Biometrics Continue to Emerge

From authentication to health monitoring, biometric-based solutions were another key feature of MWC 2017. US developers of iris-based identity authentication solutions, EyeLock, demonstrated its iris biometric solution on the Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platform. The two companies collaborated to deliver a solution that enables fast iris recognition at arm’s-length distance.

A healthcare technology company, Biotricity, also demonstrated its IoT-connected medical device Bioflux – which is powered by AT&T. Consisting of an IoT-connected device, ECG-analysis software, and comprehensive remote monitoring center access, Bioflux generates customized reports tailored to a physician’s individual patient for diagnostic purposes.

Oberthur Technologies – a leading global provider of embedded security software products, services and solutions – exhibited a selection of payment card solutions at MWC 2017. In addition to demonstrating Mobeewave’s mobile contactless payment acceptance solution, OT exhibited a card with embedded biometric security. Referred to as ‘F-Code’, the card features a built-in fingerprint sensor, designed to entirely replace the PIN.

Exciting New Applications of Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) developments were another prominent feature of MWC 2017. In particular, Samsung Electronics showcased four Creative Lab (C-Lab) projects, including: a smart aid for visually impaired people; monitorless PC viewing glasses; a VR home furnishing solution and a 360-degree travel experience platform.

Lithuanian mobile app developers TeleSoftas demonstrated two innovative uses for virtual reality. Firstly, they launched a virtual reality business tool, VR Medusa, which enables business meetings to be held in virtual reality with avatars representing the different participants. The same company also presented the idea of using virtual reality as a form of audiovisual therapy for people with phobias.

Demonstrating the application of virtual reality in the payment space, Wirecard gave an insight into the shopping experience of tomorrow. Through a virtual-reality headset users were given the opportunity to interact with the virtual world by shopping for virtual products. Linking the online world and stationary trading, Wirecard demonstrated a future where queues at the checkout are replaced with virtual payments.
